Goings on About Town
LCPS has bought the first hybrid school bus in Virginia, one of 12 in use nationwide. On the one hand, yay! Environmental responsibility! On the other, yow! Expensive! On the third hand (if you have one), we could expect to see a savings over 12 years due to efficiency. I'm leaning towards yay! but need to wait and see if we really do see a fuel cost savings.
The Virginia Senate passed a bill (37 to 3!) that prohibits HOAs from banning the use of clotheslines, though HOAs still have the ability to limit size and placement. I'm really happy about this, and hope that the House follows suit.
Cliff Keirce got sworn in as Dulles Planning Commissioner. Let me hear a WOO-HOO!!!
The LCDC will meet in the Board Room at the Loudoun Government Center on Thursday, February 4th at 7:00 (6:30 gathering for chatter and whatnot).
Town elections are coming up soon. I'm excited about the folks I know about who are running for Herndon and Leesburg. I need to buy a new pair of sneakers though. My old ones are walked through.

Can make a difference to whether you get decent treatment from your doctor.
Please note that the writer of the article basically says, "and this is why you should lose weight."
It's not as though 13 pounds overweight is obese, is it? You would think doctors would know a) that fat is often a SYMPTOM of disease, not its cause and b) diets often backfire and c) less than 5% of people who diet to lose weight keep the weight off for more than 5 years.

Meanwhile, in Northern Virginia
Equality Loudoun has done a great job of covering the actions taken by the Board of Supervisors (and my spouse, Stevens Miller, in particular) these past few weeks, but I just wanted to reiterate how proud I am of him for adding "sexual orientation and gender identity" to the list of things the county can't discriminate against. I'm also very happy that this was something the county staff were already doing, so it was just making it formal.
The addition of the language was originally on the consent agenda, which means that if nobody objects, it gets passed automatically. Any time "wasted" on this item is because members of the board objected to the automatic passing of the item...in this case, the objections came from The Man in the Orange Hat (not giving him more press), and Supervisor Waters.

As the video shows, The Man in the Orange Hat goes over the top in his objection to the language and puts on his usual homophobic, bigoted show.
Which he followed up with an objectionable email.
Which the majority of Supervisors, including my spouse, objected to:

(by the way, I disagree that TMitOH needs a mental fitness evaluation, being a bigot isn't a mental illness. What he needs is to be voted out. Sterling, please get on that.)

Blogging for Choice
Even if no one ever again is faced with an unwanted pregnancy - and I hope we get to that day - we will still need abortion to be safe and legal.
Because there are times when a wanted pregnancy needs to be aborted. To save the life or future fertility of the mother.
So especially late-term abortion needs to be kept legal and safe. Yes, I said ESPECIALLY late-term abortion. For Cecily. And for all the other women who have lost their wanted child, but not yet lost the pregnancy...for those who have pre-eclampsia...for the myriad reasons that a pregnancy can go horribly wrong in the last few months or weeks.
Keep all abortion safe and legal.

Accessibility

And, like every other time we go to the mall, it became apparent that the mall’s “accessibility plan” didn’t really include making the actual shops accessible. Lots of junk in aisles, aisles too narrow for a wheelchair, ect. (You’d think we’d stop going to the mall, but we only go about once every six months. The other mall we shop at is better, and I keep forgetting why we don’t trek out to this one very often.)
Don, kindly, pointed out that the shops I was going into didn’t have space for him. At first I thought about making complaints at each individual shop, but I wasn’t sure if the mall actually had a policy...Ultimately, I wrote a letter to the mall to bring this to their attention, but I have no idea if that will actually mean anything in the long run.
This anecdote isn’t unique by any stretch, and many people with disabilities I’ve talked to don’t even go so far as to write a letter (or an angry blog post) because this takes energy and time that could be spent doing countless other things."- Anna

These quotations have been banging around my head the last couple of days. They've been drowning out other voices, voices that say that it's all about location...that we haven't had any complaints. Happily, I seem to be in a good company of people who agree with me that inclusiveness trumps location. And there may be ways of getting both inclusion and location.
So I'm being aggressive about finding out what options we may have and I'm keeping this as my motto:
"When given a choice, I would like us to always choose the more inclusive option."

Moment of Silence
James Timbers was a good man. I went to his funeral today. The sanctuary had about 500 hundred people, the overflow room overflowed, and people were still pouring in.

At the moment, they ask for money instead of things. If you have stuff you'd want to donate, why not yardsale it and send the money you raise to them instead, or donate those items to Loudoun Interfaith Relief or Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter?
