A reminder

I am collecting links for the Campaign Websites page. If I am missing a candidate or a link, please let me know!

For the purposes of that page, I am only including campaign websites that conform with Virginia campaign law which states:

"Radio, TV and print media communications must include disclaimers displayed conspicuously. Print media includes billboards, newspaper and magazine ads, mailings, fliers, email and websites. Printed pieces consisting of more than one page need bear the disclaimer only on one page or face. VA. CODE ANN. § 24.2-955.1 (defining “print media”).

Print media: “Paid for by [name of entity].” If the advertisement supports or opposes the nomination or election of a clearly identified candidate, it must also state either, “Authorized by [name of candidate], candidate for [name of office] or “Not authorized by a candidate.” VA. CODE ANN. § 24.2-956.1. If the advertisement opposes a clearly identified candidate, the sponsor must also disclose the name of the candidate it is supporting. VA. CODE ANN. § 24.2-956.1(3). "

If you see that I have you listed as a candidate and I have listed you as having a non-conforming website (Shaun Broy, Jay Bose, Tom Reed), then ask yourself what your website is missing.

Blogs, facebook pages, official government pages (for incumbents), etal do not count for the purposes of the campaign websites page, since they don't conform to the state law definition.

I'm doing it this way to be fair, and to allow people to compare apples to apples.

If you disagree with this policy, I will be happy to hear your reasoning and will then suggest you spend a couple of bucks to purchase a .us domain and put up a campaign website. Seriously.

The Big Business of Educating Loudoun - A Guest Post by Ashburn Auntie

[Ashburn Auntie is a blogger who prefers to remain anonymous. She writes about her experiences living in Ashburn and watching her nieces and nephews grow up.]

My niece started kindergarten today! She is the apple of my eye, and I asked for the special privilege of purchasing her school supplies with her this year. When my sister handed me the list, I gulped loudly. I had volunteered to buy school supplies for my niece, not the whole kindergarten class. What started as a very special day, ended for me on a very sour note! After purchasing 12 boxes of crayons, two pairs of scissors, countless pencils, Kleenex, zip-loc bags (in two sizes), etc. I became further enraged that the items I purchased had to be very specific brands and colors - generic brands, or creative colors weren’t allowed!

Today, I saw this promotion by the Chamber of Commerce:
State of Education 2011
Date: August 30, 2011 Time: 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Official Hatrick photo

Event Description 2011 Policymaker Series: "The State of Education"
featuring Superintendent Dr. Edgar Hatrick

Dr. Hatrick is the “CEO” of the Loudoun County Public School system, with a $710 million annual budget, 79 schools, more than 60,000 students and an educational program that ranks with the nation’s best.  Loudoun's business and community leaders are invited to hear Dr. Ed Hatrick offer his annual report on the quality of public education in Loudoun, including his thoughts on the strong partnership between the Public Schools and Loudoun’s business community and how the county’s world class public schools supports a strong business climate.

Ok, now I am confused! Are our tax dollars being used to purchase stock in a large corporation? Are our schools being run for someone’s “profit”? And, why exactly is LCPS focusing on supporting a “strong business climate” as opposed to providing the best education that Loudoun taxpayers can afford? And, what the heck does the Chamber of Commerce have to do with how we educate our children?

I guess I could spend hours (and I have) debating all the issues surrounding how we look at education, but let’s just focus on the” business” aspect of LCPS. As “shareholders” we should be angry - our stock is decreasing in value every day. How many corporations do you know where the shareholders must provide the essential tools to conduct business, such as pens, pencils, scissors and paper? In such a corporation, would we allow the “CEO” to be receiving a huge salary as well as annual increases- as well as full benefits? Would we praise such a CEO for running the corporation into the ground, or would we demand the removal of such a CEO?

It sickens me that we are even looking at our schools like corporations, being run by a CEO, and influenced by the Chamber of Commerce. Parents are stuck with not only paying taxes, but also subsidizing the schools because LCPS doesn’t even provide the basic necessities such as crayons and Kleenex. Aren’t those things our tax dollars are supposed to be used for?

Yes, businesses are attracted to areas with great educational systems. However, our children and the quality of their AFFORDABLE education should be the focus, NOT attracting big business at the expense of taxpayers. It’s ironic that the big businesses that the Chamber and LCPS want to attract at taxpayer expense are the same big businesses the Chamber will demand tax breaks for while our taxes steadily increase.

As I remember my niece’s excited snaggle-toothed smile getting off the bus today, I have no doubt of the type of educational system LCPS should have. It should be one where SHE and other children are not treated as a commodity, or a statistic to bolster the “CEO’s” approval rating, or as a pawn to attract business to Loudoun, but one where our children’s education comes first and foremost above everything else, and where the quality of family life is not sacrificed to fund a failing business model.

Gah. So far not terribly happy with Google Ads

There's an advertisement for my ideological opposites, politically speaking.

I am a liberally liberal progressive. Liberally liberal progressive. Got that, Google?

Well, it looks like I have to add another link to my blog roll

My husband took a new gig. WHICH I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT BEFORE-HAND.

I think, actually, I approve.

WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER IF I'D KNOWN BEFORE-HAND.

Really, Loudoun County Republicans? REALLY?

You people make me ill.

Dick. Black. DICK BLACK. DICK "plastic fetuses for everyone!" BLACK.

On the one hand, HOORAY! He's going to be the easiest for Shawn Mitchell to beat. On the other, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? When the other anti-choicers think someone's gone a bit far...it's kind of a hint.

Dick Black. Gah.

On a related topic:

Donate to NARAL Prochoice Virginia and to Shawn Mitchell.

We got Dick Black out of the legislature once, and we're not sending him back.

Earthquake on Election Day!

I was outside my son's school, looking at his class list when the ground started undulating. We all looked around for the delivery truck and it slowly dawned on us that it had been a seismic event.

Wow. Earthquakes in Virginia.

Today is Primary Day.

[originally posted yesterday]
I won't be voting in tomorrow's today's primaries, since I don't consider myself a Republican, and I do consider it to be cheating to vote in the primary of a party I don't belong to (my own opinion, your opinion may vary and I won't judge you for that), and there aren't any Dem primaries in the district(s) I live in.

However, if YOU are planning to vote tomorrow today, here's a reminder of who is running in what primaries, and some information about each candidate.

I'm trying out having ads in the sidebar for a bit. I may not keep them.

Money Raised and Cash on Hand for report ending 8/10. UPDATED

Like last time, they are listed in order of Cash on Hand, which is made more interesting this time by the fact that we've got primaries just around the corner, so money is being spent like water. This time, I've bolded the top fund-raiser.

Of the top five on my list this time, four are incumbents.

Almost all on the list raised less than last time. Some quite a bit less. A few were quite amusing to read, actually, when you realize that if they hadn't donated to themselves, they'd have moved about 5 places down the list.

Several posted "no activity".

You may notice that there are some new names on the list as well. As always, if you know of a candidate or website not listed here, please let me know!
Candidates who hadn't filed candidate papers in time to file a report last period:
Candidates who do not fund-raise:

If I ran the circus

A friend asked me, if I could rearrange the Loudoun County BOS races to suit myself, what would my dream ticket be? Caveats: that I cannot change the Republican line up, and that I can't put my husband into any race*.

Now, it so happens that I've thought about exactly this question quite a bit and here is how I would change things, if I could.

  1. Burton (I) runs for Chair. Bellanca (D) runs for Blue Ridge. I think this makes both races much more likely to be won by these guys.
  2. McGimsey (D) runs for Algonkian, leaving Keirce (I) to sweep Broad Run. Let's face it, Pierce (D) is not going to win against Volpe (R), but McGimsey might have a chance.
  3. Dulles. I've got two names in mind. Neither of them is running. That pisses me off. 'Nuff said.
  4. I am perfectly satisfied with the candidates in Ashburn and Sterling. You guys make me happy. Keep it up.
  5. Leesburg and Catoctin are farther off my beat. I'm sure that the current candidates will do fine.

*I love having him home for dinner most nights. Heck, I love being home for dinner most nights. I'm pretty sure he'll run for something again someday, but it won't be this year or next year.

End of the reporting period tomorrow! A reminder of how the candidates stood on the most recent reports

Money raised during the last reporting period, and cash on hand for each current candidate as of the end of the last reporting period, listed in order of cash on hand; links to VPAP included. Candidates without reports from last period will be listed at the very bottom.

What I find most interesting about this is that some of the top fundraisers are not the ones with the biggest war chests three months out from the election.

Jennifer Wexton Calls on Jim Plowman to Investigate Sheriff Allegations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Jennifer Wexton
(703) 779-4896 - office

votewexton@gmail.com

Leesburg, VA (August 4, 2011) – Jennifer Wexton, candidate for Loudoun Commonwealth’s Attorney, called on Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman today to investigate allegations of “pay to play” campaign donations to Loudoun Sheriff Steve Simpson.

On August 3, 2011, the Washington Post published an article exposing questionable campaign donations to Simpson from organizations with contracts up for renewal the Sheriff’s Department, and from a local nonprofit agency. The article also cited an instance where a major Simpson campaign donor, convicted felon Osama El Atari, served less than 1½ hours of a four-day sentence at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

“Either all of these events have been taking place under Jim Plowman’s watch, and he knew nothing about them, or he knew what was going on and did nothing. Either way, it’s unacceptable for Loudoun’s top prosecutor not to act.” said Wexton. “That is why I delivered a letter to Mr. Plowman’s office today, officially requesting that he investigate the allegations in the Post article, to determine what, if any, violations of criminal or campaign finance laws have taken place. These are allegations where the taxpayers of Loudoun County deserve answers.”

Mr. Plowman has shown a pattern of launching politically motivated investigations and has not hesitated to pursue his chosen political targets in the past, notably his Susan Van Wagoner conflict of interest opinion, which was ultimately reversed by two courts, and his prosecution of Virginia State Senate candidate Mark Tate for campaign finance violations during the 2007 election cycle.

A little birdy just told me... (UPDATED)

That Ron Speakman, who lost the LCRC endorsement to Mike Chapman a couple of weeks ago, will be seeking the LCDC endorsement at tomorrow night's meeting.

I don't know if this rumor is true. [Rumor confirmed. It's on the agenda for tonight.]

I don't know what the LCDC would do if it is true.

All I know is Loudoun County never ceases to be an amusing place for the political junky.

Input please

I've noticed that, in general, the School Board candidates haven't got campaign websites. They've got facebook pages, and government pages (if they are already serving), and blogs; but only a third have campaign websites.

Which means that my campaign websites page seems woefully incomplete.

However, I'm not really willing to widen my definition for that page, since it would be a holy mess to keep up-to-date if I count every fb page and blog that anyone had (if I were running, for example, I'd be able to list 5 or 6, that's ridiculous.).

I could create a new tab for School Board Candidates only and ask each for the ONE and ONLY ONE link that they would like included.

But treating School Board candidates differently from the other candidates really bothers me. One particular candidate complained to me recently that School Board races are treated as less important than all the other races; that they are after-thoughts; that people think of it as a "starter" race. Well, my friend, it doesn't make your case when you're not putting up a campaign website. Domains are cheap, and a website doesn't have to be expensive to create.

So, dear readers, what do you think? Do I create a separate and DEFINITELY unequal space for SB candidates? Or do I treat them as at least one has asked to be treated, as equal members of the candidate pool?

The adventures of an Obama 2012 bumper magnet

I've got one, as seen in this picture:

and my husband had a matching one, up until Saturday night, when we were parked in the lot at Clyde's (excellent smoked duck, but I don't recommend the Smurf cupcake). When we returned to the car, the magnet was gone.

I'm pretty sure I know who took it, and think it was pretty petty. But no matter, we have more! BTW, person who took it, if you had asked? We would have given you one.
